Macron meets Belarusian opposition leader Tikhanovskaya

French president Emmanuel Macron met Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tikhanovskaya during his visit to on Tuesday, Tikhanovskaya’s official channel reported.


Her channel said that she planned to discuss international mediation in the political standoff prompted by the August 9 presidential election in Belarus that the opposition said was rigged.


Belarus has been rocked by seven weeks of after the country’s president Alexander Lukashenko, who has led the country since 1994, won a landslide victory. The vote was denounced by EU and US officials, and forced Lukashenko to look to Moscow for support.


The says that Tikhanovskaya was the rightful winner and wants new elections. According to the election committee, she won only about 10% to Lukashenko’s 80%.


Tikhanovskaya to Lithuania after the election. She has requested that Macron act as a political mediator. She added that the French president could encourage his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to take part in the dialogue.


During his visit to Lithuania, Macron also met with Lithuanian president Gitanas Nauseda late Monday. The two leaders agreed that the European Union should decide on sanctions against Belarus at the summit of the bloc’s leaders later this week.
