Why do you think MySQL / MariaDB is so common in projects from the view point of a devops?

I as a programmer have always preferred a PostgreSQL or MSSQL, but the MySQL was my latest pick because it was just annoying to write the queries in that. There is more to it, like old projects running on MyISAM driving me nuts and everything... but these are all aspects of programming side.

The question is more about if the oracle product is so popular because... its oracle, or it has something more to it from scaling point of view.

I do not remember a single programmer that would pick it over other common RDBMS engine (unless he know only MySQL ofc).
