Italy to tighten COVID curbs, but holds back from lockdown

Italy’s prime minister Giuseppe Conte on Monday said that the country will tighten COVID restrictions but is holding back from re-introducing a nationwide lockdown.

“Despite our efforts … the evolution of the epidemic in the last few days is very worrying,” Conte said, adding that tougher measures, including limiting travel between the worst-hit regions and a nighttime curfew, were now needed.

Conte said that Italy would be divided into three areas depending on the risk levels, which would be set according to 21 parameters including the number of people with symptoms, infection rates and availability of hospital beds.

The country is currently tackling a in infections, hospital admissions and deaths. Its daily number of infections has increased 10-fold over the last month. Italy has so far recorded more than 38,000 deaths, the second highest toll in Europe after the United Kingdom.

“The more effective we are in reducing contagion, the faster we will be able to ease restrictions and avoid an unsustainable deterioration of our economic and social fabric”, Conte said.

The latest measures will be included in a government decree to be issued in the next few days.
