Y540 charging woes
I've read a large number of people having serious charging issues with the Legion Y540 but haven't seen any solutions. I've now sent mine to the repair depot twice and had a replacement 230w adapter+cable and a new motherboard, but the problem still persists. The indications are it's a hardware issue, but I'm at a complete loss as to what's causing it.
Any input would be appreciated as I don't have much confidence in the repair people at this point, and it's clearly a problem lots of others are having ... ... ...
The laptop worked fine for months until it began to intermittently charge while plugged in. The issue steadily worsened over several days, requiring the charging cable to be held into the port at a specific angle in order to charge. The cable's fit in the port got looser and the tip of the rectangular charging pin was abnormally hot. After a week or so it became impossible to charge the laptop at all.
I sent it to the repair depot and Lenovo returned it with a new 230w adapter+cable. It charged reliably for a few hours, but then needed to be propped in at an angle again. The new cable didn't fit snugly in the port from the outset and again the charging pin was too hot to hold. Curiously, the entire cable's positioning seemed to impact whether it would charge, not just the angle of the pin within the port. A non-perfect angle would cause the charging light to blink, and at one point while trying to reposition the cable the laptop displayed a warning message about the AC adapter wattage being too low. Within a day or two it became impossible to find an angle which would charge the laptop.
I sent it back to Lenovo and this time they replaced the entire motherboard. I got it back today and after a few hours the issue returned. The charging pin fits snugly into the new charging port, although once again it's extremely hot. This time I noticed that adjusting the mains cable connection on the power brick influenced whether the laptop would charge, just as adjusting the charging pin on the laptop does. I think the amount of power the laptop is using might affect whether it charges, if I place it under heavy load it seems to stop charging even if the cable remains completely still. I also saw it start charging again straight after shutting down. When I opened a demanding game the laptop completely powered off (the fans went on full power for a second then the machine instantly switched off) - surely a power supply problem? I doubt it's a software issue, as even when turned off it won't charge unless the charger cable angle is carefully tweaked.
I've tried using different mains power points, updating the BIOS and drivers and doing a static discharge.
The charging pin heat makes me suspect there's a short circuit somewhere. But I read online that the charging circuit is a motherboard component, so surely the replacement would've fixed this? Could the battery be the issue? I'm also worried about damage to other parts of the laptop from this issue.
