To all Lenovo Legion Y740 owner with Thermal Problems --> REPASTE
Hi everyone,
I'm a Legion Y740 owner (i7 8750h, RTX2060, 16Gb RAM, 1Tb NVME Drive) and I've had a lot of problem with thermal throttling on this device.
I've bought my latpot for a really discounted price (more than 40% less, like 1270€) and this was a Demo unit (never used for gaming but with a year of power on-time).Everything seemed fine at the beginning, but then I realized that my GPU were not working properly.I had a lot of thermal throttling on GPU with severe clock speed drop and terrible gaming experience.The only way I was able to play games was using a max CPU clock speed of 3,0-3,4Ghz with -140mV undervolt. Even though my GPU was working at max 1100Mhz.
Playing with CPU at 3,9Ghz was impossible because the GPU clock was constantly throttling to 300-450Mhz and I had terrible stutters in game. In any case from MSI afterburner I always had really unconsistent clock speed with a lot of up and down. The only BIOS suitable for me were the one with unlocked undervolt and with manual fan speed control.
Today I've finally decided to repaste with artic MX-4 and now I think I have a complete new laptop.I don't know if I can expect similar performances for long but, guys, I'm shocked.
Now I can play with CPU at 3,9Ghz and the GPU can run at 1400-1500Mhz with not a single drop. CPU clock graph is now a FLAT LINE; no drop, no spike, always at max. I'm using BIOS 1.08 with full fan speed and with a cooling base Klim cyclone.
Playing CP 2077 with CPU at 3,4Ghz, -140mV core, -125mV cache and GPU with +100Mhz clock, +200Mhz memory with afterburner, I have max 70°C con CPU and 75°C on GPU.
Performances for games that I've tried so far:
CP 2077
Before Repaste: 1080p, all settings High, RTX off - 45 - 50 FPS - many fps drop, with RTX on, 30-35FPS with many, many fps drops.After Repaste: same for all RTX off, 60-70 FPS with NO drops, RTX on, 40-50FPS with NO DROPS
Doom Eternal - ultra gore nest (my benchmark level):
**Before Repaste:**1080p, ultra nightmere, 60-100 FPS - some stuttersAfter Repaste: same settings, 80-150FPS and above - no stutters
Now I feel that the keyboard is way hotter than before, so I guess the heat is now being dissipated a lot more than before.
Another thing I saw; one of the screws that keep the cooler attached to the GPU was broken in half and I've already read this on Reddit so I guess this is a design flaw.
Tomorrow I'll try to fix it (glue didn't worked) but I think the heatpipe are doing their work.
In any case the original thermal paste was really abundant but it looked really dry. On the CPU I've seen also some strange white spot (looked like mould to give you an idea). Sure it was not working really well.
