Report: Lions plan to hire Saints’ Dan Campbell as next head coach
With the Saints now eliminated from the playoffs, the Detroit Lions are planning to hire Dan Campbell away from New Orleans to be their next head coach, according to .
Schefter adds that a contract between Campbell and the Lions still needs to be negotiated, but “it is not considered an obstacle.”
Campbell, 44, spent the past five seasons coaching with the Saints, most recently as assistant head coach/tight ends coach on Sean Payton’s staff. He has never been a coordinator in the NFL but has worked in various coaching capacities since retiring from a 10-year playing career as a tight end in 2010. His playing career included three seasons with the Lions and he was a member of the team’s 0-16 campaign in 2008.
The Lions fired Matt Patricia in November after less than three full seasons as head coach and finished the 2020 season with a 5-11 record.
