While the Buffalo Bills now know they have played their last home game of the 2020 NFL Playoffs, their fanbase continues to prove they are among the best in the league after their 17-3 win over the Baltimore Ravens. That’s because despite their win, they took time out of their celebration Saturday night to do something nice for one of their team’s opponents in a gesture that only the classy fans of the Bills Mafia are known for doing time after time, year after year.
Last season’s NFL MVP Lamar Jackson is a quarterback few defenses want to face, yet after watching their team defeat him and the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday, fans of the Buffalo Bills, known as the Bills Mafia, did something worth talking about.
During the latter stages of the game, which saw his night end prematurely, sending the Bills Mafia fanbase to work. Jackson, who played and won the Heisman Trophy at the University of Louisville, began the local chapter of a group that helps make sure children are fed, especially during times when schools are closed, such as the summertime and during the ongoing pandemic. After discovering Jackson’s support of the charity, the Bills Mafia went to work, raising money for the group shortly after Saturday’s game.
This is not the first time this season the Bills Mafia has been called into action. Shortly after the death of Josh Allen’s grandmother in early November, fans, who were inspired by their quarterback’s performance against the LA Rams one day after her death, began donating money to the John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital in Buffalo. At one point it was reported that the donations reached $483,000, at which time Allen, who wears #17 on the field, donated $17,000 of his own money. Since then, by way of many $17 donations, over $1,000,000 more has been raised in the name of Patricia Allen, thanks to the Bills Mafia.
To their credit, this isn’t even the first time the Bills Mafia has taken up the cause of players from other teams. In January 2018 after the Cincinnati Bengals knocked out the Baltimore Ravens on the final day of the 2017 season, clearing the way for Buffalo to make the playoff for the first time this century, the Bills Mafia sprang into action, raising over $300,000 in less than a week for Dalton’s Foundation. It was a Bengals quarterback who tossed a 49-yard pass to wide receiver Tyler Boyd that helped send Buffalo to the playoffs that season, with Boyd’s charity, the Western Pennsylvania Youth Athletic Association received over $50,000 in donations following the game.
There’s a word for what the Bills Mafia does, classy; and there’s another word for what they are showing players like Lamar Jackson, respect. It takes a lot for fans to remember that there are real people out there in uniform playing for and against their favorite teams. As someone who has heard fans cheer when star players have fallen to injury, the Bills Mafia showed there are still genuinely good NFL fanbases, and being a “fanatic,” when done properly, can have a positive influence on the lives of others far away from the games we watch.
The last few years have been difficult for our country with so much division among those looking to tear things apart. Thanks to the Bills Mafia, however, we know that when we want to, we can help one other, and when we do so unexpectedly, it makes the rewards of doing so that much more fulfilling. It’s difficult not to cheer for the Buffalo Bills to reach the Super Bowl now, and for some fans outside of Kansas City, perhaps this story will help them root for Josh Allen and his teammates this Sunday. That’s because win or lose, the Bills Mafia are already in the Hall of Fame in terms of an NFL fanbase.
