The Best of the Day: May 1st, 2021

The ‘Best of the Day’ is a daily PSO original series showcasing the most significant stories, highlights, and facts going on in the land of the NFL, NBA, & MLB every day. Get a recap on EVERYTHING that happened on 5/1

The game of the day saw the Mavericks defeat the Wizards by one point thanks to a game-winning 3-pointer at the end. Dallas was able to complete the comeback thanks to a magical performance from Luka Doncic, as the ‘Slovenian Sensation’ recorded a historic triple-double. While Trae Young will get most of the credit (and rightfully so), the unsung hero of the Hawks turnaround this season has been Clint Capela. LaMelo Ball picked up right where he left off with more highlight-reel dimes in his return from injury, the Pacers blew out the Thunder in historic fashion, and PSO ranked the top RBs in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Luka’s historic triple-double fuels the Mavs nail-biting win over the Wizards

out-dueled as the Dallas Mavericks defeated the Washington Wizards 125-124 Saturday night. The win didn’t come easy though, as Dallas came back from a nine point fourth quarter deficit before sank a 3-pointer on a Doncic assist with 9.3 seconds left to secure the win, elevating the Mavericks to the fifth spot in the West at 36-27.

Doncic finished with a historic stat line of 31 points, 20 assists, and 12 rebounds, becoming the first Mavericks ever to post a 20+ assist triple-double in franchise history. Doncic is also the first player since 1977 to finish a game with 30+ points, 20+ assists, and one turnover or less.

Westbrook finished the night with a near triple-double, recording 42 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists as the visiting Wizards were unable to hold on to a fourth quarter lead. finished the contest with 29 points, but was just 1-of-5 from beyond the arc, including missing the potential game-winner at the buzzer. Washington fell to 29-35, but still remains on track to secure their place in the play-in tournament with a three game lead over Chicago for the 10th spot.

CAPELA DESERVES MORE CREDIT FOR ATLANTA’S UNEXPECTED SUCCESS THIS SEASON

The Atlanta Hawks have been one of the most surprising teams in the NBA this season. They are currently in fifth place in the Eastern Conference and are one game behind fourth to potentially host a first-round playoff series when most experts didn’t pick them as a playoff team.  is coming off a 20-point, 11-rebound performance in their win over Chicago on Saturday night, and he is no stranger to sensational stat lines like this.

When thinking about the success of Atlanta, it’s easy to point to  as the main reason why, but Capela is flying under the radar and deserves more credit. ATL’s big man has been averaging a double-double this season, having one in 43 out of 57 games this year. Additionally, it is the best rebounding season of his career. Not only is he the best board-getter for the Hawks, but he averages the most per game in the entire NBA during 2020-21. His presence is felt on the defensive end too, averaging 2.1 blocks a night.

The 6’10’’ Center’s impressive season has had a huge impact on Atlanta this year and isn’t talked about much due to the impressive shooting around him. Young is averaging 25.5 points per game while  and  are both shooting over 40% from beyond the arc. It’s a shooters league now, and this has diverted attention away from Capela’s amazing season. However, there is no chance the Hawks would be anywhere close to getting a top-four seed if it wasn’t for their young Center’s contributions.
