What If The Packers Traded Aaron Rodgers To The 49ers?

What If The Packers Traded Aaron Rodgers To The 49ers? | Sports Takes & News | TooAthletic.com

The 2021 NFL Draft had an interesting sidebar conversation take place last week. That’s because as new players entered the league, one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks was asking to be traded. The player, Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers, reportedly told one team to “” last week, but with the Packers unwilling to trade him for the moment, that team went back to their original draft plan. So, what if the Packers had made the deal Aaron Rodgers wanted them to? How different would the 2021 Draft have looked with the future Hall of Famer joining the San Francisco 49ers?

It is clear an ugly divorce is unfolding in Lambeau Field after last week’s news that Green Bay quarterback for the 2021 season. The news was updated over the weekend with word that the future Hall of Famer would only return if the . It is the GM, as the face of the front office, who Rodgers has had the most contempt for in recent months, dating back to at least the 2019 Draft when Jordan Love was selected in the first round as the heir apparent to Rodgers at quarterback.

Reports surfaced this weekend that Rodgers told San Francisco to “come and get him” before this year’s draft started on Thursday night, something the 49ers tried to do before being rebuffed by Gutekunst and the Packers front office. San Francisco, who had traded up with Miami for the draft’s third overall pick, went on to select Trey Lance out of North Dakota State to become the future quarterback of the team, making Jimmy Garoppolo’s days with the team numbered. But what if Green Bay had also said enough was enough and moved on from Rodgers. What would the 2021 NFL Draft have looked like if this trade actually happened?

I would think that Rodgers, coming off his best season in years, would have not only forced the 49ers to give up Jimmy Garoppolo in any trade, but the third overall pick in this year’s draft, giving the Packers a chance to add an impact player and make a Super Bowl run in 2021. The deal would have also thrusted Rodgers into the highly competitive NFC West and given the 49ers the best pure passing quarterback in the division, and kept them even or ahead of Arizona, Seattle and the LA Rams at the position. In short, we would have seen a lot of primetime games from this division with Rodgers in a 49ers jersey as those teams dueled for the NFC West crown.

As for the 2021 Draft, who would have Green Bay chosen with the third overall pick? Would Florida tight end Kyle Pitts be catching passes from Rodgers instead of Matt Ryan in Atlanta? Would one of the reunions we are expected to see in Cincinnati, Miami and Philadelphia be cancelled if the Packers have taken Ja’Marr Chase, Jaylen Waddle or DeVonta Smith at number three?

While there is still time before the start the training camp for Rodgers to retire or be traded, it is believed that because of salary cap considerations that the Green Bay quarterback cannot be traded before June 1. A delay in making a deal would allow the Packers to spread out the “dead money” over two seasons, not one since, like in the NBA, NFL trades are just as much about trading contracts as they are trading players.

The problem Green Bay has is San Francisco won’t have the third overall pick to offer in any deal next month as they did last month and many of the other teams that might have been willing to make an offer for Rodgers took a quarterback in the draft or don’t have the same number of assets they had on draft night. As a result, the prospect of Aaron Rodgers retiring is likely higher than Green Bay trading their him before the start of the 2021 season. Which means Packers fan should be hoping #12 has about 20 or 21 games left to play for the team, the 17-game regular season, and a few more in the 2021 NFL Playoffs before the team wins the Super Bowl LVI, since there is now little doubt this will be Aaron Rodgers’ last season playing quarterback in Green Bay if he plays at all.
