Batwoman Review – I’ll Give You a Clue (2×13)

In the words of Jigsaw… do you want to play a game?

Only Batwoman’s Jigsaw was Arthur Brown, a former quiz show master turned villain named Cluemaster, who escaped from Blackgate in the hopes of getting revenge on Sophie Moore.

Moore and the Cluemaster’s rift dated back five years to when she was a rookie Crow who somehow managed to solve his clues and thwart his master plan to hurt his gameshow contestants, which landed him in prison.

“I’ll Give You a Clue” was a fun installment that forced Sophie to team up with Mary and Ryan sans her Batwoman cover.

It was like a girl’s night that ended up with the three of them putting their brains together to stop an evil mastermind.

They drank pricy tequila, played trivia, and bonded by getting to know each other on a deeper level. And when Ryan and Mary’s lives were at stake after they stepped on a weight-sensitive explosive pressure plate, Ryan was forced to admit that Sophie correctly figured out that she was Batwoman.

Usually, you’d expect a series to drag this out with Sophie using the newfound information as leverage, but I’m so glad that wasn’t the case.

Having them all on board opens up the possibility of so many fun storylines.

She kept dropping subtle hints that she knew Ryan was Batwoman hoping that she’d confess even suggesting that they call Batwoman to help them out of their explosive predicament.

And eventually, Ryan had no choice but to acknowledge it in order to save herself and Mary.

Batwoman’s identity is starting to be Gotham’s worst kept secret.

While Sophie was fetching Batwoman’s tool from the lair — and I love how geeked out she was — Mary called Ryan out for allowing her hate to cloud her judgment and prevent her from thinking rationally.

Ryan’s been a solid and fair Batwoman, but she’s allowed her personal life to interfere and almost get her killed on several occasions.

Sophie hasn’t given Ryan many reasons to trust her, at least not that Ryan’s aware of, so her hesitancy was understandable, but there was no point in denying the obvious when it was clear Sophie knew it for a fact.

Sophie then proved herself by saving Ryan and Mary with just 15 seconds on the clock before apologizing for treating Ryan like an ex-con prior to knowing she was Batwoman. She also informed her that despite being a Crow, she was on her team and protected her identity from being leaked to the agency.

If that doesn’t scream “you can trust me,” I don’t know what does.

With these three badass women working together, the Bat Team is stronger than ever.

It probably helped that Mary vouched for Sophie personally; she may work for the Crow’s, but Sophie’s always been on the right side of justice.

She’s the only one that’s consistently extended a hand to Batwoman and sees the value of teaming up with a vigilante. After all, they’re on the same side and fighting for the same thing: justice.

I don’t know why the Crow’s keep thinking that Batwoman is the enemy and interfering in her pursuit of Black Mask.

While the ladies were preoccupied at the Quiz Show HQ, Luke stayed behind to nerd out with Stephanie and figure out what the ClueMaster’s (aka her father’s) next riddle was all about.

Luke and Stephanie matched each other’s intelligence level, which was fun to watch. It’s rare that someone else speaks Luke’s language.

When she knocked him out, I thought that maybe she was in cahoots with her father, but everything she did was to protect him (and Sophie) from the madman.

She also confessed to her father that she was the one who solved his riddle five years ago and asked Sophie to cover for her, which upset her father.

Thankfully, Luke was able to regain consciousness and figure out the riddle in time to free her from the car that was quickly filling up on fumes.

Oh, the lengths some parents will go when their kids turn out to be smarter than them but don’t share their values of murdering people!

Stephanie repaid Luke with a kiss, and though they definitely had chemistry, I’m still waiting for Luke and Mary to happen! I will not allow myself to hop aboard this ship!

Meanwhile, Alice remained Black Mask’s prisoner, but per usual, she found a way to level with the villain and weasel her way out of permanent death.

When calling “daddy” didn’t work, Alice put two and two together and realized that if Circe Sionis was behind the Michael Meyers-looking mask, then Black Face must be her father, Roman.

From there, she offered to help Circe get her face back since she does specialize in human faces.

And you’ve got to admit, it was a pretty brilliant plan. Alice is a cat with nine lives who knows how to talk her way out of any situation without giving up all her cards.

When Roman wasn’t around, she questioned how Circe was still alive when she saw the real one die in prison.

Nothing gets past Alice, though, admittedly, it was a bit of a stretch for Alice to recognize Kate simply by looking at her eyes.

I guess that’s a testament to the power of their sisterly bond. Even without a face in place, Alice knows Kate when she sees parts of her body!

How will she play this? Will she realize that Kate was hypnotized the same way she once was?

Jacob Kane had a chance to redeem himself when Alice called him for help. Isn’t that what he wanted by injecting himself with Snake Bite? The point of the drug was to escape reality and relieve himself of the guilt he felt for not saving Beth.

But when he had an actual second chance to save his daughter in the way he couldn’t the first time around, he still blew it anyway.

Of course, the fact that he was high out of his mind probably contributed to it his lapse in judgment.

Kane took it so far that he was wheeled into Mary’s clinic foaming at the mouth.

Oh, Commander. This is not a good look.

I bet he’ll be glad that Mary kept her underground clinic open because if she hadn’t, his little Snake Bite addiction would’ve been front-page news.

What did you think of the episode?

What will Alice do with her newfound information? Will Jacob survive and get clean? And are you happy that Sophie knows about Batwoman’s identity?
