Saw 10 Is A Possibility After Spiral: The Book of Saw, Says Chris Rock

, which is the ninth film in the Saw franchise, could get a sequel, according to the star and producer, Chris Rock. The Saw franchise debuted in 2004 when James Wan and Leigh Whannell’s story revived the horror genre and led to many successful sequels. Eventually, the gory horror films became repetitive and uneventful, and many thought the franchise had come to an end after 2017’s underwhelming Jigsaw. In 2019, however, a surprising announcement came out that the franchise was not only returning with a spinoff film but was being spearheaded by comedy star Chris Rock. without taking away from it being a Saw film.
After being delayed a year due to the coronavirus pandemic, Spiral will hit theatres this Friday, and it will tell the story of Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks (Rock) and his partner William Schenk (Max Minghella) as they investigate a series of mysterious murders committed by a Jigsaw copycat. A TV spot highlighted how differs from John Kramer (Jigsaw), as the targets are now dirty cops. Also, while gore and blood are still present, the film appears to follow a more suspenseful/thriller route. Lionsgate and co. are hoping the changes, alongside some familiar Saw elements, will rejuvenate the franchise, and according to the film’s star, a sequel could already be in the works.
As the release of Spiral inches closer, Rock has been doing some media rounds promoting the film, and in a recent interview with , the star hinted that a Spiral: From The Book of Saw 2 could happen. During the interview, the star was asked if this project is a one and done for him or if he will “stick around for a while, even if it’s just behind the scenes?” Rock replied with a subtle, “We’re talking,” before going on to say they want this film to do “well,” and don’t want to get “too ahead of ourselves.” However, according to Rock, “another one wouldn’t be out of the question.”
"We're talking. We want this one to do well, so we don't want to get too ahead of ourselves, but, if this one does well, I could see myself doing this again. I could see ... I mean, I don't want to spoil the movie, but it's open ... another one wouldn't be out of the question."

Considering the history of Saw and the fact this appears to follow a brand new killer that draws inspiration from Jigsaw, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that “another one” is possible. If the film does well, it will be interesting to see if Rock’s character will once again be at the center of the possible sequel. Spiral’s story seems to have a big focus on Rock’s character and his father (Samuel L. Jackson), and Saw has a history of finding ways to keep characters around even if they die (E.g. Jigsaw). There has also already been and a possible TV show, so it appears that Lionsgate are confident in their latest Saw project.
Judging by the various trailers and comments from Rock and , Spiral looks to have found a great balance between finding a fresh approach while maintaining the traditional elements of Saw audiences will expect. The dirty cops angle gives the film quite a current real-life message, and moments like Zeke holding a saw are clearly an homage to one of the most iconic scenes in the franchise’s long history. Whether Spiral succeeds or not remains to be seen, but if it does, it appears fans should expect a Spiral: From The Book of Saw 2.
