What If...? Season 2 Will Explain How Gamora Got Her Armor

According to head writer A.C. Bradley,  season 2 will explain how the Guardians of the Multiverse’s Gamora got her armor. Based on the comic book of the same name, Marvel Studios’ latest animated series on Disney+, What If…?, has re-imagined classic MCU stories and characters, courtesy of its Multiverse. Narrated by the all-seeing , the anthology series embraced its overarching narrative in the finale episode — which saw the Watcher break his oath of non-interference to combat Infinity Ultron.

At the end of episode 8, the Watcher approached Doctor Strange Supreme (Benedict Cumberbatch) for help in stopping an alternate version of Ultron (Ross Marquand) threatening the Multiverse. In episode 9, “What If...The Watcher Broke His Oath?,” its titular character brought together the Guardians of the Multiverse, including a shady Doctor Strange, Captain Carter (Hayley Atwell), T’Challa/Star-Lord (Chadwick Boseman), Erik Kilmonger (Michael B. Jordan), and a version of Gamora (Cynthia McWilliams) sporting some oddly familiar armor and wielding her surrogate father’s double-edged sword. The latter character appears when the Watcher visits a Nidavellir in an unfamiliar universe, where Gamora, Eitri, and a space-savvy are destroying an empty Infinity Gauntlet. Per The Watcher, the audience is told Gamora is a survivor of Sakaar and the killer of Thanos.

In a recent interview with Variety, director Bryan Andrews and head writer Bradley spoke on wrapping up season 1 of What If…? and what fans can expect from season 2. At one point, Bradley was asked about the version of Gamora whose backstory audiences have yet to see. Read what she had to say below:

“That’s a definite yes,” said Bradley. “Basically what happened was we originally had an episode planned for earlier in the season that was a fun, light-hearted, living, breathing Tony Stark-centric episode with Gamora. However, due to the COVID pandemic, one of our animation houses was hit incredibly hard, and the episode needed to be pushed into Season 2, because it would not be finished in time...I think everyone’s going to be surprised by the way Gamora gets that armor, and how her relationship with Tony evolves, because they’re obviously good friends in that bit that we see. So it will be a fun universe to see, hopefully, next year, and I think you found the silver lining there. It is a promise of more stories to come.”

In the wake of episode 7, “What If...Thor Were An Only Child?,” Bradley had previously spoken on how the series’ While her knowledge of how to destroy Infinity Stones makes sense for The Watcher’s plan, it’ll be interesting to see just how she came to be. It’s mentioned that she survived Sakaar, the planet on which the Grandmaster holds his Contest of Champions in Thor: Ragnarok (2017). It seems logical to assume that both she and Tony Stark somehow ended up there and became impromptu gladiators.

In addition to more of Gamora, What If...?'s season 1 finale teased the return of at least one Guardian of the Multiverse. It remains to be seen if The Watcher, Gamora, Doctor Strange Supreme, Captain Carter, or any of the finale’s other major players tie into multiversal films such as Spider-Man: No Way HomeDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Season 2 of the series has already been confirmed to rework Phase 4 films. That being said, —which will featurs its own Gamora from another timeline— is part of the slate.
