The United Kingdom government on Sunday said it is conducting a new review into the impact of allowing Chinese telecoms giant Huawei’s equipment to be used in British 5G networks.

“Following the US announcement of additional sanctions against Huawei, the National Cyber Security Centre is looking carefully at any impact they could have to the UK’s networks. The security and resilience of our networks is of paramount importance”, the government said.

In January, the UK decided to let Huawei play a limited role in building the country’s 5G mobile phone networks , denying he United States’ efforts to ban the tech giant. Huawei was banned from supplying kit to “sensitive parts” of the network, known as the core.

However, there was a significant backbench rebellion over the issue in March and pressure has grown domestically since the coronavirus crisis began to take a tougher line on China.

Last year, in May, the US government added Huawei to its trade blacklist, amid concerns that its 5G equipment enables the Chinese government to spy on other nations. Earlier this month, the US further tightened export controls on Huawei’s access to American equipment and software.

Huawei declined to comment on the NCSC’s newest investigation.
