For some teachers, using TikTok in the classroom seems an unappealing idea. It serves as a distraction for the students, which can be frustrating for teachers. However, there is no need for it to be a distraction when it can be used as an engaging way to make a lesson exciting.

More and more teachers around the world are beginning to embrace the social media platform as a way to get creative in the classroom and make learning a fun task for children and teens. As well as becoming a popular learning platform in the classroom, TikTok also serves as an excellent way for teachers to interact with their students visa the phone during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Here are 7 ways that TikTok can be utilised within the classroom or for remote-based learning!

1 – To Teach a Lesson

TikTok is gradually being integrated into the lesson plans of teachers in many parts of the world and for good reason too. Students can use what they have learned in the classroom or through video and the teacher can then ask the students to create a 15-second clip on TikTok to showcase what they have studied. It serves as a fun and engaging way for students to demonstrate their knowledge of the key concepts of the subject and is becoming a popular way to compliment a classroom lesson on the topics of history and grammar in particular.

2 – To Explain Lesson Concepts

Teachers can also use TikTok as means of hammering home the most vital concepts of a lesson. A teacher can set up their own TikTok account or send videos that have already been created by other TikTokers to explain the key concepts on any given subject. This offers the student an exciting way of reinforcing their understanding of the topic and they can access the videos whenever they please.

3 – To Create a Final Project

When the hashtag #finalproject is searched on TikTok there are millions of excellent videos that students have created to demonstrate their projects. This can be done individually, however offering the students the chance to complete a final project using TikTok as a group is a sure way to ensure that they’ll enjoy the task. Teachers can give the group a specific topic and the students can then decide between themselves what role they will play in the TikTok (character, narrator, script writer).

4 – To Create Awareness in the School

TikTok groups can be set up for a particular school or district area and students can create TikTok clips so that fellow students can see what events are happening within each school. Teachers and other school staff can encourage students to get creative and use TikTok to create videos for sporting events, school science fairs, dances, and lots more.

5 – To Connect With Other Teachers

Sometimes it’s easy to forget that teachers are real people too and TikTok isn’t just for students. Teachers can harness the power of the social media craze to network with other teachers near and far. Teachers can follow each other and learn new techniques and ideas that they themselves can use in their own classroom. It’s a great way for teachers to receive advice and tips on what works and what doesn’t work in the classroom.

6 – To Build Relationships with Students

Let's face it, if students feel more connected to their teachers then they are more likely to engage in the learning process and this is where TikTok can play a vital role. A teacher can set up a TikTok account and create educational clips that also gives the students a glimpse into their life. It allows the student to get to know their teacher and interact with them over the platform.

7 – To Generate Student Interaction

Teachers can provide students with educational hashtags to follow. Students can then interact with one another by sending each other educational videos related to the hashtag which not only helps in the learning process but forges relationships.

These are just some of the positive ways in which TikTok can be used to encourage learning. However, it is important to note that as with any social media platform there are limitations to its use. Privacy issues are a real possibility. Teachers should ensure that their students aged from 13-17 have the approval of parents or guardians for their kids to use TikTok (and children under the age of 13 are prohibited from using the platform). The appropriate settings should be placed on the kid's TikTok accounts to ensure they do not come across any mature content or that outsiders cannot view their uploaded content.
