Hara Bhara: The Afforestation Project by the Telangana Government

In an effort to restore the green cover of Telangana, the state government has launched an afforestation project in collaboration with Marut Drones. Marut Drones is a Hyderabad-based drone technology startup. Using seedcopter drones, the project aims to plant 50 lakh trees in 33 districts of the state. The Hara Bhara project is the first of its kind in the country.

Accelerated Drone Integration

Drones are rapidly being used in several development projects. The is another example of this. Manual afforestation efforts not only require a large workforce but are also time-consuming and expensive. Seedcopter drones are unique drones that shoot seedpods into the ground. This allows for large-scale seed scattering at a fraction of the cost.

The Hara Bhara project would cover 12,000 hectares of forest land across 33 districts of Telangana. Marut’s seedcopter drones were unveiled along with the launch of this project at PJTSAU. The campaign also aims to provide rural and tribal employment through afforestation. This will further inculcate awareness about climate change and the need for afforestation.

Telangana Minister for IT, Industries, and MAUD, KT Rama Rao said, “Forests are essential to maintain a clean and habitable environment for human life, and emerging technologies have potential to support the afforestation efforts. Being already at the forefront of using drones for new use-cases, we are initiating Hara Bahara to plant seeds to increase the forest areas across all the districts of the State.”

According to Prem Kumar Vislawath, the founder of Marut Drones, the company intends to plant one billion trees across India by 2030. While that goal may be a long way, seedcopter drones have proven to be efficient several times. A company called has been using this technology for afforestation missions. Dendra’s aerial seeding drones can plant nearly . Using drones is the fastest method of afforestation. With a rapidly deteriorating environment, swift action is the need of the hour. A drone-aided afforestation project is an efficient way to sequester carbon and restore the air quality and biodiversity of a region.
