Tx module bolsters Wi-SUN FAN communication

Rohm’s BP35C5 wireless smart utility network for field area network (Wi-SUN FAN) communication module connects up to 1000 nodes in a mesh network. The Wi-SUN FAN long-range protocol enables the configuration of large-scale mesh networks for smart cities and smart grids, including infrastructure and advanced transportation systems, as well as electricity, gas, and water meters.

Housed in a 15×19×2.6-mm surface-mount package, the BP35C5 transceiver module brings increased speed, reliability, and security to mesh networks. The 920-MHz part offers data rates up to 300 kbps. The Wi-SUN FAN enables mesh networks that perform multi-hop transmission between relays. This allows for remote management of terminal-mounted applications using bidirectional communication between relays and terminals. To ensure stable communication, the hop route between relays can be automatically optimized, even in the event of communication failure due to newly-constructed buildings or other surrounding obstacles.

In addition to obstacle avoidance and high reliability, the BP35C5 provides the necessary security functions for carrying out secure communication without the need for complicated control. Certifications acquired under the FCC and ARIB allow for immediate use in both the US and Japan.

The BP35C5 Wi-SUN FAN communication module costs approximately $69.52 and is available from online distributors Mouser and Digi-Key. An evaluation board for the Wi-SUN FAN module costs $80.
